VitaSource Bromelain Supreme

The ancient South American pineapple ingredient for wound healing, swelling & inflammation

Bromelain is one of the most researched and supplemented of all natural enzymes––but for more than digestion. Extracted and purified from the pineapple plant, it is used in meat tenderizers and has been studied as a treatment for sinusitis, sports injuries and wound healer after surgery.

Traditionally, pineapple has been used for centuries in Central and South America to treat indigestion and reduce inflammation. Once again, science has validated the wisdom of these folk customs.

Bromelain is rich in proteolytic enzymes, which are naturally occurring chemicals that break down protein. Unlike most digestive enzymes, bromelain works in both in the acid environment of the stomach and the alkaline environment of the small intestine, so it helps with food breakdown and digestion in both sites.

Although most large enzymes are broken down by digestion, those in bromelain largely appear to be absorbed whole. This suggests that bromelain can actually produce systemic (whole body) effects. Once absorbed in the blood, bromelain appears to reduce inflammation, thin the blood, and affect the immune system.

Proteolytic enzymes attack inflammation and blood clotting wherever it may occur in the body: aching joints, tight constricted lungs, congested mucus membranes or infected and traumatised skin or tissue. In fact, bromelain is...

Widely Used in Europe to aid in Recovery From Surgery and Athletic Injuries, as well as to Treat Sinusitis and Deep-Vein Thrombosis.

Bromelain has been clinically studied for the above uses and even as a treatment for arthritis, boxers’ bruises after fighting and delayed-onset muscle soreness in people unaccustomed to exercise. The best evidence has come from its results in clinical trials for sinusitis.

Bromelain Supreme™ combines bromelain from the pineapple stem and fruit, ensuring that the full benefits of the different enzymes from both sources are harnessed in the one dose. Also in Bromelain Supreme™ is a gum extract from Boswellia serrata, also known as frankincense from the Bible. This resin from the boswellia plant was so famed and prized then as an anti-inflammatory agent that it rivalled gold and myrrh in value. Another component of the proprietary blend in Bromelain Supreme™ is cayenne or red-pepper fruit (Capsicum annuum), adding to its effectiveness as a digestive aid.

A note on safety…

Bromelain is generally safe and seldom causes side effects except for occasional mild gastrointestinal upset or allergic reactions. However, because bromelain somewhat ‘thins’ the blood, it shouldn't be combined with drugs such as warfarin (Coumadin) without a doctor's supervision. One small animal study suggests bromelain might interact with sedative medications, increasing their effect. It might also increase blood levels of various antibiotics, which could present risks in some cases. Also, one trial suggests that doses of bromelain taken at eight times higher than standard recommendations might increase heart rate (but not blood pressure). The safety of bromelain in pregnancy and lactation is not established so it is not recommended you take Bromelain Supreme if pregnant or breastfeeding.
